Find Your Niche: Themed Cruises with Something for Everyone

Themed cruises are a great way to meet like-minded people and enjoy a trip someone has organized and planned, all around whatever your specific interest may be. There are themed cruises for virtually anything you could want, so the hardest part might just be deciding what that is. These are some ideas to get started, from the most-searched themed cruises on Yahoo.

10. Game of Thrones cruise: Where the fighting happens

A cruise in the world of Game of Thrones might be a little violent for a vacation, but fortunately these trips are inspired by the show and book rather than being re-creations of them. The luxury line Crystal Cruises began offering its Game of Thrones excursion in 2014, which includes a visit to Castle Ward in Northern Ireland (Winterfell in the show) and a chance to try your hand at archery. The excursions are offered on its September London-Boston itinerary and the August Dublin-London trip. Last summer, Holland America began providing GOT excursions, which also visit filming locations in Northern Ireland and let you play out your fighting fantasies. Holland America offers its excursions on virtually all of its Baltic and Celtic itineraries throughout the summer.

9. Craft beer cruise: Beer tasting on the open sea

Beer and boats — what’s not to love? And we’re not the only ones who think so. There are plenty of beer cruise options. Norwegian’s Pacific Coastal cruise offers tours of local breweries, and Un-Cruise’s San Juan Islands exploration trip is beer-themed twice this year. For a once-a-year experience, the Alaska Brews Cruise sets sail in September for a mini beer festival and multiple tasting sessions. Oh, and Alaska.

8. Kid Rock cruise: Chillin with Kid Rock

To cruise with Kid Rock, you’ll have to wait till next year. The annual Kid Rock Chillin’ the Most Cruise on Norwegian Cruise Lines began March 2 and ends today. The cruise includes parties, music, and just one stop during the four days, in Cozumel. The difference between the cruise this year and the ones in the previous five years is that this was a “blind date” where cruisers didn’t know what other acts Kid Rock would be bringing along.

7. Star Wars cruise: May the Force be with you

If you want to go to a galaxy far, far away, you’ll have to wait until 2016. Starting in January, Disney will offer a special Star Wars Day at Sea on eight sailings of the Disney Fantasy to the Caribbean. The day will include meet-and-greets with Star Wars characters (though, presumably, Darth Vader won’t try to choke you to death using the Force), movie screenings, a Jedi Training Academy, and food and drink specials. If you don’t come in costume, well, you’ll be the weird one.

6. High Seas Rally cruise: The most fun not on two wheels

High Seas Rally hosts a number of fun competitions celebrating all the things bikers love, including “Best Belly Flop,” “Best Tattoo,” and “Best Beard.” (Photo: High Seas Rally)

High Seas Rally started in 2002 and claims to be the only biker rally in the world on a cruise ship. How can you have a biker rally without bikes? The High Seas Rally is as much about the bikers as the bikes, and it’s all about having fun. Like they say: “Besides, there’s lots of beautiful, exotic locations that you just can’t ride your bike to.” This year’s rally will be over Halloween in the Western Caribbean. Don’t be scared of all that fun.

5. Christian-themed cruise: Bible study on the boat

Christian-themed cruises can vary from cruise to cruise, but all tend to provide Christian music, worship services, Bible study, excursions to religious sites, and, of course, social activities. These trips are so popular that, along with the regular cruise lines’ offerings, there are a number of Christian travel agencies as well, such as All Christian Cruises and Inspiration Cruises, and Living Passages offers a full Mediterranean cruise. Holland America, Royal Caribbean, Princess, and Celebrity all offer Christian cruises regularly, too.

4. Star Trek cruise: Seeking out new civilizations

Since 1992, Cruise Trek has been bringing Star Trek fans and celebrities together to voyage into the unknown — except that you know exactly what you’re in for: fun. This year’s cruise will adventure to the Caribbean in November. The highlight of every year’s trek is the convention-like atmosphere that brings actors and behind-the-scenes guests for Q&A sessions, as well as fun Star Trek games. Not a bad way to spend a week boldly going where many have gone before.

3. Dancing With the Stars cruise: Are you the dance champion?

So you think you can dance? This is your chance to live out your TV dreams. Holland America’s Dancing With the Stars cruise includes dance classes with professionals, appearances by celebrities from the show, and a ship-wide dance competition. Only one dance champion will be named per sailing, but winners with the highest scores on each of the ships will win a free room on the January 2016 trip to compete for the Mirrorball Trophy. Dance your way to semi-stardom in June on either the Bermuda or Canada itinerary.

2. New Kids on the Block cruise: Party with NKOTB

If you’re a New Kids on the Block fan, then there’s just one cruise for you: NKOTB Cruise 2015 in October. Leaving from Miami, it will involve two days on the sea with the band, a beach party in Grand Turk, and concerts (lots of concerts). The only downside is that the cruise sells out quickly, so if you’re a member of Block Nation, book now.

1. Singles cruise: Mix and mingle

Yes, cruises are popular with families. But there’s a reason why singles cruises are No. 1 on our list. A boat is a great place to travel by yourself and meet other people traveling by themselves. Yes, there’ll probably be dating games, but the atmosphere depends on what kind of singles cruise you pick. The only problem will be deciding among all the options. Princess was one of the first lines to offer singles cruises and will have two sailings in 2015, to the Caribbean and to Alaska. Or, you can opt for a singles-specific travel agency, such as Singles Travel International’s cruise department or SinglesCruise.com. One thing to know: Many cruise lines charge a singles supplement fee — a fee that you pay if you’d rather have a room to yourself than be paired with a stranger of the same sex.
