A message in a bottle was discovered off the coast of Ireland nearly two years after it was written.

Rory Golden was participating in an annual scuba dive to Friar’s Island when he saw something floating in the water. As he got closer, he noticed it was a bottle, and scooped it out of the water.

To his surprise, the bottle contained a note written by an 11-year-old girl in Massachusetts, which means the bottle had traveled nearly 3,000 miles across the Atlantic Ocean.

The message read:

“My name is Natalie. I’m throwing this bottle into the ocean at Quidnet beach on the island of Nantucket on August the 25th, 2013. If you find it please write to me and tell me you found my 2013 message in a bottle. Thanks.”

Admittedly, the message wasn’t particularly moving, but Golden still felt compelled to return it to the sender.

According to the Irish Independent, he reached out to Natalie and has made plans to return the bottle. He’s also chatted with her father, who informed him that the family spends every summer on Nantucket and have released a message in a bottle for the last 10 years.

In the days of texting and technology, there’s something sweet about a young girl sending out a message and having it returned by someone on the other side of the world.

It may not get there quickly, but you don’t have to worry about going over on your cell phone data plan.
