When choosing a hotel, you typically look for a high rating and four or five stars. At these hotels, guests are looking for one thing —marijuana.

As more states legalize recreational marijuana use, the hospitality industry is taking notice and creating marijuana-friendly hotels, also known as “Bud and Breakfasts.”

We know what you’re thinking — it’s just a bunch of stoners lounging around listening to Phish. But that’s not the case. These luxury B&Bs provide top-notch food, spa treatments, and 700+ thread count sheets. “Pot enthusiast come from a variety of demographics,” says Sean Murphy, Editor in Chief of Jetsetter.com. “So, it is only natural that some businesses would want to cater to a more upscale client to differentiate themselves in the market.”

Currently, only Colorado and Washington have legal recreational dispensaries, making them them hot spots for cannabis tourism. In the Mile High City of Denver (what an appropriate name!) three Bud+Breakfast’s have been opened by the The MaryJane Group. Their goal is to provide “premier cannabis-friendly lodging and hospitality” and they are committed to “high standards.”

At first glance these pot palaces look like your typical country retreats, that is, until you take a closer…whiff. The menu features a “Wake and Bake Breakfast,” where guests can sip on coffee or sample different strains of marijuana. In the spa, guests can relax with services that use THC, CBD, and CBN oils. Of course, no stay would be complete without a 4:20 happy hour where guests are invited to consume recreational marijuana products with munchies (a.k.a. hors d’oeuvres) provided.

Just north in Washington state, Jeremy Cooper and Chelsi Pennington recognized the burgeoning market and opened their own version of a B&B calling it the 7 Leaf Bed & Breakfast. Like the ones available in Colorado, this establishment provides decadent dining and comfortable rooms with vintage décor. With names like the “THC Suite” and “Bill Bong Thorton’s Room,” you know cannabis is welcome, but smoking is limited to designated areas and vaporizers or ionizers must be used.

“We created a place to show people that the marijuana culture is not just bongs and black lights,” Jeremy tells Yahoo Travel. “It’s beyond that. It can be cultural and historical. We’ve gone above and beyond even the average bed and breakfast. We want our guests to have a gourmet and cannabis experience.”

Aside from offering a fun atmosphere comfy place to stay, the one thing these new B&B’s really want to do is educate their guests and change the perception of recreational marijuana users. “We’re a miniature museum where you can really experience 100 years of history about cannabis and hemp,” adds Jeremy. “We are diligent in teaching people about medicine and textile history and that there’s a cultural exchange as well.”

It’s this low-key, high-end environment mixed with top-notch education that attracted Tanja Pettersen to stay at 7 Leaf. “This is the first type of bud and breakfast experience I’ve ever had and it’s been amazing,” she said. “My boyfriend doesn’t partake at all and he’s having just as great of a time because he’s learning about the science and history of cannabis. This is an educational experience rather than just getting high all day.”

Another guest, Nick P. from Chicago echoes this sentiment. “It’s a lot different from my high school days of rolling up a joint in the alley,” he said. “Even if I weren’t interested in the cannabis side of things, I would still be a very attracted to this B&B. There’s style, culture and fun behind the work that they do.”
