Traveling with a bike is about to get a whole lot easier – in fact you soon will be able to pack one in your carryon. A new bike design called the “Impossible” has achieved the impossible: It’s an electric bike/scooter that folds down to a size small enough and light enough to tote in a backpack.

The secret to achieving to the “Impossible,” which collapses down to 17 inches and weighs less than 11 pounds, is the totally unique design by Impossible Technologies out of Beijing, China. The bike, which has been made possible by Kickstarter funds ($267,000 and counting), has no pedals (it’s electric, after all), it’s body is built around circles rather than angles and lines, and the carrying case doubles as a seat. The bike is also made largely from carbon fiber so that it is durable (it can carry up to 180 pounds) but lightweight.

The bike can travel at speeds up to 12.4 miles per hour, for 45 minutes – longer (for more than 15 miles) at normal speed. Extra batteries will be available, and the Impossible can be charged anywhere there is an outlet.

Forty percent of the bike is customizable, like the wheels and the handlebars, and Impossible Technologies plans to eventually make the rest of the bike customizable as well. Accessories are also part of the future plans for the company.

The Impossible will be available in three colors, and the limited edition Kickstarter model will be ready to ship in August and cost $530.
