Don’t Look Like a Tourist! How to Travel Like a Local

The best part about traveling is immersing yourself in a new city and culture. And the best way to do that is to hang out with locals.

However, it can be difficult to make new friends, especially if you’re traveling alone.

So here are a few tips to get in good with the locals.

Eat with them

The websites Bon Appetour and EatWith both connect travelers with local chefs in cities all around the world. It’s the best way to sample local fare, because the chefs invite you into their home, and serve you a meal made in their kitchen. Guests are typically part of a small group, so dining in a scenario like this will allow you to make friends while learning more about the local food and culture. Added bonus: You can pick the chef’s brain for good restaurants to try in the city.

Visit their hangouts

This tip isn’t for everyone, but a great way to get in good with the locals is to sleep on their couch. I know dozens of people who have used the website Couchsurfing to stay with locals instead of hotels. Other than having a place to lay your head, hosts are typically very welcoming and will even show you around the city — uncovering aside of the city you could never find in a guide book.

Get involved

Cities love events, and at any given moment you can find a festival, outdoor theatre, market, or concert. So check the local entertainment listings and get involved with the community.

Connect with your interests

Just because you’re on vacation doesn’t mean you can’t partake in your favorite hobby. Find a group that interests you on Meetup, or take a pottery lesson, dance class, or cooking seminar. Chances are you’ll meet some locals who have a shared interest.
