Does 'The Simpsons' Take Place in South America?

Homer Simpson might live in South America.

A recent episode of “The Simpsons” may have inadvertently revealed the location of Springfield, the town in which the long-running show takes place. Or perhaps it was the worst. Astronomy. Flub. Ever.

An eagle-eyed writer for Slate was watching the episode in which inventor Elon Musk makes a guest appearance. In one scene, Musk is seen looking out a window at the night sky. Anything wrong with this picture?

You can see the tip of the setting crescent new Moon is pointing to the right. But Phil Plait, who writes Slate’s astronomy blog, points out that in the Northern Hemisphere, the tips point to the left, away from the sun. Just like in the photo below, which was taken in D.C.:

And where do the crescent tips point to the right, as they do in
“The Simpsons” episode? The Southern Hemisphere, says Plait.

So that settles it: Bart Simpson may be Peruvian. Or Argentinian (“Don’t cry for me, Argentina” is very close to “Don’t have a cow, man.”).

So is Plait out of his mind? Or is his “Simpson’s” revelation a perfectly cromulent theory?
