He may have done it as a prank. Or maybe he wanted a souvenir from his flight. Either way, a 29-year-old passenger aboard a WestJet flight has learned the hard way: flight attendants don’t like it when you take their stuff.

The passenger was yanked off the Canadian flight by the cops after being accused of stealing an important piece of aircraft equipment: the megaphone in the plane’s galley.

The Case of the Missing Megaphone happened on a WestJet flight out of Toronto. Upon landing in Saskatoon, the plane’s crew apparently noticed the megaphone was gone. A passenger, Mike Van Dijk, told the Canadian Press that police boarded the plane and the pilot announced that something had gone missing.

“At first, it kind of seemed like something had fallen off the plane,” Van Dijk said.

Then, Van Dijk said, police made their own announcement to the passengers: “‘You can either tell us who [the thief] is right now, or we’re going to have to go through all the bags and it’s going to take quite a while.’”

It was then, Van Dijk said, the alleged megathief turned over his bag showing the stolen megaphone.

The alleged thief, Jake Michael Piasentini, was arrested. No reason was given for a possible motive for the megaphone abduction. But as is the case with basically every wacky airline-related story, authorities believe alcohol was a factor (which is strange because anyone who’s had to listen to a drunk person knows the last thing they need is a megaphone).

The alleged thief now faces a theft charge along with another charge for interfering with the flight.

It may seem like overkill to turn a pilfered megaphone into a police matter. But WestJet didn’t become a leading Canadian budget airline by letting drunks (allegedly) walk off with their stuff. Even if it is just a megaphone.
