Spotlight on Death Valley: Flickr photo of the day

Compass

Los Angeles-based photographer Nikhil Shahi wisely chose the cool month of January to visit Death Valley. Located in eastern California, Death Valley is renowned for its furnace-hot summer temperatures; the highest recorded is 134 degrees Fahrenheit, officially making it the hottest place in the world.

But wait, there’s more! It’s also No. 7 on the top 10 list of lowest places on Earth: 282 feet below sea level. (The Dead Sea holds the record for Lowest: minus-1,360 feet.)

Mr. Shahi waited for the sun to peek through the clouds and illuminate the mountains of the Panamint Range, lending color to his photo of the salt flats.
