Reflecting on a fishing town: Flickr photo of the day
On the side of a building, in the fishing village of Henningsvær, Norway, a graffiti artist by the name of Pøbel has painted a fisherman. The man is kneeling and clutches a huge codfish to his chest; his head tilted to the sky and his mouth is open in prayerful thankfulness. Stenciled beside the painting are the words: In Cod We Trust.
Located in the Lofoten Archipelago, roughly 60 miles north of the Arctic Circle, the little fishing village of Henningsvær, because of its remoteness, escaped being transformed to the contemporary style of architecture that befell so many Norwegian towns in the 1960s and 1970s.
Not seen in this photograph by Mats Anda are the rugged mountains that rise behind the town. In the summer months, when the sun never sets, Henningsvaer is a popular destination for climbers with a penchant for Cod.
