Maria Elena’s Typical Store: Flickr photo of the day

The sign above the door says, “Typical Store.” Yeah, right. But she does advertise improved seed, natural life and hunger for tomorrow, and who doesn’t want that? A rough interpretation of the scary-looking skeleton hauling off three ears of corn is that GMO corn seed is bad. Maria Elena offers natural seed – note the bees pollinating the ear on the cornstalk.

This photo was taken by Bradford Duplisea, in the town of San Pedro La Laguna, in the Central American country of Guatemala. Although Roman Catholicism has been the predominate religion since the 16th century, nearly 40 percent of the population is now Evangelical Christian, but all still practice a little Mayan traditional religion, just in case.
