The Italian Riviera in pictures

Exploring Italy’s Riviera di Levante (“the coast of the rising sun”) is a tough task, but someone has to do it. Actually, I’ve been to this coastal curve between Genoa and Tuscany before: four years ago, I hit the popular Portofino and the coveted Cinque Terre, and was so entranced that I vowed not only to revisit my favorite coastal villages, but also search out the lesser-known towns to see if they measured up to the guidebook hotspots. They did, and more.

In this magical place of pesto, pastels, and a glittering stretch of turquoise Mediterranean Sea, life is lived differently—casually, beautifully, and with more than a touch of whimsy.
