Gonna need a smaller boat: Flickr photo of the day
“Those of you standing on the starboard side of the ship can now see the Piazza San Marco…” That’s not something you’ll be hearing much longer. For years huge ocean liners have crept up Venice’s Grand Canal, offering their several thousand passengers a look, but not a stop, at the famous city.
Those days will soon come to an end. The Italian government on Tuesday said they will ban large cruise ships in Venice, not only because of the damage their wakes do to the ancient canal-side buildings, but also for the danger they pose to all the smaller watercraft Venice is famous for. Adding insult to injury, the ships don’t/can’t stop and all those tourists never get off the boat to shop and eat.
