Going for a 14-minute spin: Flickr photo of the day

Compass

Photographer Kunal Mehra had high hopes the night he set up his tripod and camera in Arches National Park, near Moab, Utah. He chose a spot among the towering sandstone rock formations. Aiming the camera toward the North Star, he opened the shutter and let the world spin for 14 minutes.

What he should have gotten for his effort was an image of gold-and-white star trails against a velvety blue-black background. Instead, the streetlights of Moab, billboards, neon signs and the headlights of automobiles all combined to rob the night sky of its true majesty. Without traveling far into the wilderness, or having a convenient massive power outage, it is virtually impossible for humans to see the night sky as our ancestors did.
