Flickr photo of the day: The tiger’s nest

Built to honor the 8th century Guru Rinpoche sometime around the year 1692, the Tiger’s Nest sits on a sheer rock cliff some 10,000 feet above the Paro Valley, near Taktsang, Bhutan.

To understand why the temple was built in such a precarious place, it is important to suspend skepticism and accept the legend that Guru Rinpoche rode to the location from Tibet on the back of an emperor’s former wife, who had turned herself into a tigress. She took him to a cave high on the mountainside where he meditated and emerged in eight incarnate forms. The temple has become the cultural symbol of Bhutan and is one of the most sacred places in the country. This shot of it was captured by Flickr user rain_walker.
