Flickr photo of the day: Smoking time capsule

There are two ways to look at volcanoes: as ticking time bombs, capable of exploding at any moment and wreaking pyroclastic havoc on the surrounding countryside. Or, they can be viewed as a method of time travel that allows us to see the Earth as it was in its infancy.

There are few places better to look back into the distant volcanic past than East Java. Photographer Oliver Davis, who currently lives in Bangkok, Thailand, recently traveled to Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park, located in East Java, and captured this image of Semeru Volcano, towering 12,000 feet above the remains of two others, Mount Bromo, left, and Mount Bromo, center.
