Flickr photo of the day: Seven seas

Compass

“For the world is wondrous large, seven seas from marge to marge…” wrote Rudyard Kipling in his book of poems, “The Seven Seas” (1896). “…And it holds a vast of various kinds of man. And the wildest dreams of Kew are the facts of Kathmandu...”

When Kipling (1865-1936) was a boy, international trade was still carried out by sailing ships. The biggest, and fastest, of them all were the Clippers, built for the China tea trade. An old captain could boast of having sailed the Seven Seas, two of them being the Sulu and the South China Sea.

P VanSchalkwyk captured this sunset in El Nido, on Palawan, an island in the Philippines that separates the South China and the Sulu seas. (Celebes, Timor, Banda, Flores and Java were the other five seas.)
