Flickr photo of the day: Oslo’s green lung

Someone coined the phrase “Oslo’s green lung” when referring to the Akerselva River. Only five miles long and flowing from Lake Maridalsvannet to Oslofjord, it falls an amazing 500 feet through the heart of Norway’s capital and most populous city.

For more than a hundred years, the “Aker” was a source of hydroelectric power for various industries in the heart of Oslo. It was also a convenient sewer. In 1980, locals began an initiative to limit emissions. Today it is a popular walking and picnic destination.

One online review called the Akerselva “Oslo’s Danube.” It is certainly blue in this photo by Bhalalhaika in June 2013. And yes, it all freezes over in winter.
