Flickr photo of the day: Inside the Blue Mosque

Compass

This photo, taken by Uxio Rivas of Galicia, Spain, shows some of the 20,000 handmade ceramic tiles that line the interior of Istanbul’s famous Blue Mosque. Built in the early 1600s, it is also known as the Sultan Ahmed Mosque. On the bottom left is the finely carved marble mihrab. To its right is the ornate minber where the imam stands to deliver his sermons.

Gold and gems (long gone to pillagers and museums) once hung from the oil lamps. With soft light pouring through stained glass windows that were a gift to the sultan from the Signoria of Venice, Italy, the space is spellbindingly magnificent and conveys the essence of serenity.
