Flickr photo of the day: Desert heat

The weather has been really hot in Anza-Borrego Desert State Park, but that’s not unusual. Located about 90 miles south of Palm Springs, Calif., it has an average July high temperature of 108 degrees. It’s a desiccating dry heat and the probability of rain during summer months is around 3 percent.

Although clouds like these, photographed by Bill Dickinson, often look promising, they seldom produce rain. However, rising and falling air currents within them often produce dangerous lightning that is often the source of wildfires.
