Flickr photo of the day: Born in London, made in China
Taxis in London have always been black, and from 1929 to 2008 they were made at a small factory in Coventry, England. That’s when London Taxi International called on Greely Group Holdings, one of China’s largest independent automobile makers, to build more of their TX4 cabs faster and cheaper… and in colors, too.
Incidentally, cab is short for cabriolet, a two-wheeled carriage pulled by a single horse. Around 1891, a German named Friedrich Bruhn invented the Taximeter, which calculated fare based on time and distance traveled, and someone eventually shortened its name and attached it to cab; thus the taxicab was born.
