Flickr photo of the day: Alabaster Coast

Compass

Normandy’s “White Cliffs,” which stretch some 80 miles from Dieppe to Etretat, are mirrored by the Cliffs of Dover in England. The soft limestone cliffs, a marvel of ever-changing light, have always attracted the romantic/artistic set. Early notables included Marie-Antoinette, Victor Hugo and Claude Monet, who incidentally, became disgruntled by the influx of Parisians and other “vin ordinaire.”

Although called the Alabaster Coast, the cliffs have many layers and shades of color from ochre to … alabaster white. Olivier Vancayzeele captured this lovely image at sunset near Etretat.
