Five Miles Up with … Véronic DiCaire

Compass

dicairedicaire

Who is Véronic DiCaire? Hear the 100 voices the Canadian impersonates and a flurry of answers come to mind – Rihanna, Britney Spears, Whitney Houston, Lady Gaga, Carrie Underwood. DiCaire’s career has also seen various incarnations, from stage productions of “Grease and “Chicago to comedy circuits to judge on “X-Factor France to recording artist with several albums under her belt. Now, the chameleon is appearing in her first Vegas show, Bally’s “VÉRONIC Voices,” through the end of August. Her producer? One of the very voices in her repertoire – Celine Dion, along with Dion’s husband, René Angélil. Will Vegas join her list of favorite venues, including Switzerland and the fields of Embrun? Time will tell.

What’s something you never fail to pack in your suitcase?
My Rick Owens wool vest. Even in Vegas temperatures. It’s my safety blanket.

Carry-on or check-in?
Both. Hell, the more space a girl can have the better.

Window or aisle?
Both, but lately a window.

What’s your idea of the perfect vacation?
No schedule, good book and good food.

Tell us about a vacation you’ve taken that’s come close thus far.
I had this wonderful vacation in Corsica. It was perfect. The weather, the food, the book – everything was like, wow. We stayed at a friend’s house in the mountains that has beautiful views of the sea.

What’s the worst vacation you’ve taken?
We’d been touring in Europe for three years, so planned a weekend trip to Italy during a break. It was perfect until I got the stomach flu. I stayed in my room while everyone else visited Michelangelo’s frescoes.

Where’s your favorite destination for performing?
Switzerland. There’s something magic there. Maybe it’s the combination of people or that it looks like home. Back in Canada we have that similar scenery.

What's the silliest souvenir you’ve ever brought back from a trip?
I went to Haiti with the Army. We went to a beautiful street market where I saw this big figurine made out of marble. I said, “Hey, my mom would love this!” So I brought it back. It was so heavy, it was the stupidest thing ever for me to bring back.

Ever try a food you wished you hadn't?
So far so good.

Favorite hotel you've ever stayed in?
The Grand Hotel Kempinski Geneva. The director, Thierry Lavallee, and staff are so kind, and the rooms have great city views.

Favorite restaurant you’ve discovered while traveling.
Mr. Angélil, who is known for his love of food, brought us to L’ami Louis in Paris. If you go there, don’t put food in your mouth from the start of your day as it has very exuberant servings. It’s a very famous place to go. That night France’s president, Jacques Chirac, was there with his wife. It’s small, with crooked floors, and waiters who’ve been there since it first opened.

Biggest regret you've ever had while on vacation.
I try to not have regrets. Every time I travel for work, there are places I want to visit but can’t, like the wineries in Burgundy, France. So I write these places down in my notebook as a wish list, knowing one day I’ll be back.

The one thing you're willing to splurge on when traveling above all else.
Shoes.

Three artists on your travel playlist?
I love Nora Jones, Melody Gardot and Madeline Peyroux. Their music is so smooth and perfect for vacations.

Where would you take someone visiting your hometown for the first time?
I come from a small, agricultural town, Embrun, Ontario. I’d bring them to the country to see the immensity of the fields and beautiful farms. In my show I tell a story about my first audience being Embrun’s cows, which is true.

You only get one more trip in your lifetime. Where will it be?
Australia/Africa. It’s hard to choose.
