Five Miles Up: Hilary Knight looks for another big catch in Sochi

This isn’t Hilary Knight’s first time at the rodeo, aka Winter Olympics. The hockey player brought home a silver medal from the 2010 Olympic Games. On Thursday, the U.S. Women’s Hockey Team is determined to capture the gold in a finals rematch against Canada. So what does Knight think of Sochi thus far? Last FMU checked, @Hilary_Knight’s Twitter feed reported: “Russia is a surreal experience to say the least.” This from a woman who has her own stuffed sailfish…

What’s something you never fail to pack in your suitcase?
My electronics or shoes -- I love shoes and tend to pack too many of them.

Carry-on or check-in?
If I could carry-on, I totally would. I’m usually traveling with my personal luggage, carry-on duffle bag, hockey bag and sticks. I can’t decide if TSA doesn’t like the skates onboard, or if the bag is too large at 40 pounds to carry on.

Window or aisle?
Aisle. I feel awful when I have to climb over people, or ask them to get up so I can take a walk or use the restroom.

What’s your idea of the perfect vacation?
Clear blue water, amazing rays, and a place that has a variety of different outdoor activities.

Tell us about a vacation you’ve taken that’s come close thus far.
After 2010 Olympics, a handful of my teammates and I rented a villa in the Virgin Islands. It was so much fun and very relaxing.

Where is your favorite venue for competing in your sport?
Anywhere that draws a massive crowd. I like to play in a packed building filled with passionate fans. Regardless of whom they’re cheering for, it’s always so exciting to play in front of crowds.

What’s the worst vacation you’ve ever been on?
When my brother and I were younger, we went skiing in Montana, where he ended up skiing off of a 20-foot cliff and falling on a sheet of ice. Between hospital visits and surgeries, that vacation was a nightmare.

What's the most unusual souvenir you’ve ever come back with?
I went deep-sea fishing in Mexico and caught a seven-foot sailfish. My dad didn't think I would ever catch a fish that big again, so, as a gift (even though I asked him not to), he got the fish stuffed and shipped back to the U.S. The rule is that when I get married, the fish has to be mounted in my new house. Safe to say, whomever I marry will be very lucky to have an immediate piece to go on the wall... lovely.

Ever try a food that you wished you hadn't?
Eel. I wasn’t too fond of the texture.

Biggest regret you've ever had while on vacation.
Not packing enough sunscreen.

The one thing you're willing to splurge on above all else when traveling.
Hotel or more legroom. Need to make traveling comfortable!

Three artists on your travel playlist?
Drake, Beyonce and Counting Crows.

Where would you take someone visiting your hometown for the first time?
I would take them up Baldy Mountain. From the top, you can see the entire city of Sun Valley, Idaho. It’s an amazing view.

You only get one more trip in your lifetime. Where will it be?
