Daily Destination: Shanghai

Compass

Anything new in Shanghai is bound to bigger, better, flashier. And so it will go with Cirque Le Soir, the circus-themed nightclub set to open on the Bund on September 20. The club will be interactive, which means that you may bump into a seven-foot giant named Anton in the crowd.

Of course, the neighborhood in itself is a huge draw. The Bund, which faces the Huangpu River, is a major thoroughfare and walkway—and a premier tourist attraction for its line of gorgeous buildings. It’s like an encyclopedia of early 20th-century architecture from the days when the Bund was the Wall Street of Asia. You’ll see Beaux-Arts, Art Deco, Gothic Revival, Neo-Classical, Romanesque Revival, and other ornate forms. Make sure to have a look inside the Fairmont Peace Hotel to get a sense of the flapper glamour of the 1920s.

Fall is a busy time in Shanghai and particularly on the Bund, so it’s best to walk the length of it in the morning to see locals flying kites and practicing tai chi. Then take the ferry over to the Pudong side of the river to see the taller, futuristic towers that represent the rise of modern China. FYI: the Shanghai Tower, still under construction, will be the tallest skyscraper in China and second-tallest building in the world.
