Best spa getaways in the U.S.

Insider Escapes

By Stefanie Michaels

If it's relaxation you're after, then you've come to the right list. Here are a few U.S. spas to maximize your "getting away from it all" and luxuriating.

Nestled deep in the San Juan Mountains, in a former mining town of the Colorado Rockies, is the ultra-private Dunton Hot Springs, a small and exclusive place complete with a restored ghost town. The place where cowboys once roamed, it's now a quiet spa destination (leave cell phones behind, they're useless here) for those seeking simplicity and nature.

Impeccably appointed log cabins (with Internet access), local and organic gourmet food served "saloon style," and fitness challenges on nature trails mixed with hot stone massages and body treatments are included in the "unwinding" offer.

Those seeking adventure, wilderness horseback trail rides, helicopter skiing, mountain biking, snow shoeing, hiking, camping, fly fishing, river rafting, kayaking, or guided archaeological site tours can get them all on-demand. Or, simply soak in nature's hot springs for hours under star-studded skies.

52068 West Fork Road Dolores, CO 81323 (970) 882-4800

Montana's Granite Spa at The Ranch at Rock Creek is a jaw-dropping, all-inclusive guest ranch, offering various lengths of stay and ways to stay on property from log cabins to luxury tents to stays at the main lodge. Pricing for two people starts at $995 for room, meals and activities. Horseback riding, target shooting, hiking, biking and wildlife viewing are part of the outdoors program to get you moving and into Montana's big sky scenery.

Their Granite Spa is full-service optimizing rejuvenation and promoting relaxation after each active day outdoors. The a-la-carte spa menu serves up Swedish deep tissue massage, mountain rock treatments such as hot stone massages, and facials incorporating pure white peat, arctic berries, mushrooms, and concentrated antioxidants.

From several days to a week's spa holiday, packages are flexible and include gourmet spa cuisine, fitness classes, hiking, beauty and spa treatments, mind-body awareness programs, lectures on health and nutrition, and accommodations.

The stunning Red Rock Canyons launched The Biggest Loser at Fitness Ridge in Ivins, Utah, inspired by NBC's hit show, "The Biggest Loser." This is a destination spa that offers a structured program to turn guests into winners of a healthy and happy lifestyle. Onsite are positive life councilors/life coaches, food techs and dieticians offering tips on low-calorie ways to eat, and fitness experts training and toning muscles into shape with more than a dozen classes for indoor and outdoor challenges, such as daily hikes in Red Rock's stunning scenery. The spa offers a variety of body treatments, acupuncture, reflexology and muscle-relaxing massages.

Canyon Ranch at Lenox, Mass., offers personalized services that begin at booking. Four weeks before arrival, a spa concierge connects with guests to pre-book details of the getaway, planning everything from "what to expect" to choosing treatments. Their destination spa focuses on prevention, nutrition, fitness and personal growth programs as well as massage, facials and body treatments such as the Euphoria Treatment that starts with a warm blanket and sage-oil wrap, scalp massage, body mask and full body massage. More than 40 classes focusing on core strength, flexibility and balance are included complimentary, including hiking, snowshoeing, obstacle course challenges, and kayaking.

The Spa at The Breakers is located on 140 acres on the beach in Palm Beach, Fla., boasting a Mediterranean- style design set in a tropical oceanfront location with views of the Atlantic.

This spa destination works best for families and is kid-friendly. Amenities include a private beach for yoga classes, five oceanfront pools and four whirlpool spas, 25 luxury beach bungalows with personal concierge, oceanfront spa boasting the popular Moonlight Outdoor Massage as the sun sets, two fitness centers, nine restaurants and five bars for dining and entertainment, 36-hole championship golf, 10 on-site boutiques, including Guerlain, Ralph Lauren and Lilly Pulitzer at The Breakers and a family entertainment center and Coconut Crew Kids Camp.

The cliffs of the ultra-posh Laguna Beach's Spa Montage at Montage Resort boast ocean views and a 6-star spa getaway just one hour south of Los Angeles in the O.C. This celebrity hangout is where the stars go to decompress on the "down-low."  Privacy is key.

Pulling inspiration from the ocean's natural resources, the spa utilizes mineral-rich seaweed and salts into botanical treatment products focusing on detoxifying, replenishing and overall wellness and balance. A Eucalyptus steam room, redwood sauna, cold plunge pools, warm whirlpool, private spa garden for meditation, and outdoor fireplace at cliffs edge make for a total regeneration. Afternoon tea meets panoramic views, yoga in the "movement studio" and T'ai Chi make for outdoor and indoor fitness options.

30801 South Coast Hwy. Laguna Beach, CA 92651 (949) 715-6000

Recently, a friend returned from The Ashram, where for one week she hiked, ate organically, worked on spiritual enlightenment, and lost a whopping 10 pounds sweating it out here in the hills of Calabasas, a hippie-type enclave in the rolling hills near Malibu. Even though Barbara Streisand is a regular guest, don't expect that this is a luxe spa destination getaway -- no matter who guests may be, everyone is on the "equal," and simple bedrooms and baths are shared.

It's all about hiking (daily for about five miles working up to the week's ending 15-mile extravaganza), with yoga and meditation so strenuous that most attendees head away with muscles they hadn't seen in years, complete with dramatic weight loss due to a vegetarian diet, salads and soups for most meals. After dinner pow-wows introduce chakra and spirituality guides to round out a week of mind, body and soul extreme experience.

2025 N. McKain Street, Calabasas, California (818) 222-6900
