Perched on the craggy cliffs of Negril’s West End, this hip enclave has been welcoming the gypset crowd since the ’70s and counts Bob Marley and Bob Dylan as previous guests. Thirty-four air-conditioned stone-and-thatch cottages punctuate the tropical gardens and line the cliffs, each with complementary Wi-Fi and several with wraparound decks. Dine in-house at the tiki torch-lit water’s-edge restaurant, or feast al fresco on local fare (try the steamed fish) at Pushcart, the affiliated neighboring eatery. Rates start at $95 per night.

Nueva Vida de Ramiro, Mexico

There’s no A/C or T.V. at this eco charmer in the off-the-grid oasis of Tulum, but you won’t miss either, because the seaside and garden casitas here are cooled by constant breezes and the rolling turquoise sea just beyond your door is the main attraction. When you’re not enjoying the surf, you can bike into town or tour the nearby Mayan ruins. But we like to just sip a cerveza in a hammock slung between coconut palms and take the advice of NVR’s owner, who sagely recommends, “Come here and get lazy.” Rates start at $110 per night.

Jake’s, Jamaica

We love the chilled-out, Boho-Caribbean vibe at this seaside boutique in the fishing village of Treasure Beach on Jamaica’s pastoral south coast. An eclectically decorated clutch of seaside rooms, cottages and villas (think Casablanca-meets-Caribbean, with concrete walls studded with wine bottle mosaics; vintage iron beds and outdoor bathtubs) is clustered around a curvaceous saltwater pool, tiny beach, and the Driftwood Spa. And the rum punch from Dougie’s Bar will instantly make you “feel alright.” Rates start at $115 per night.

Sibonné Beach Hotel, Turks and Caicos Islands

The first hotel to open on Providenciales’ famous Grace Bay beach is by no means the fanciest, but it is definitely the best deal around for a roost that’s right on island’s the 12-mile-long marquee strand. Rooms are simple and clean, and the delish conch crepes and conch wontons on the menu at the hotel’s Bay Bistro (big winners at Provo’s annual conch festival), are bested only by the oceanfront view. Rates start at $120 per night.

Hotel Lunata, Mexico

You won’t find a more convenient location for Playa Del Carmen’s restaurant and shops than this 10-room inn that’s right on the buzzy main drag, Fifth Avenue, and only a block from the beach. The comfy rooms (some with terraces and balconies) are decorated hacienda-style, with river-stone-tiled showers, talavera ceramics and colorful local art. And the rear garden, where the included Continental breakfast is served, is a tranquil respite when you need a break from the action of the avenida. Rates start at $125 per night.

Natura Cabana, Dominican Republic

A world away from Punta Cana’s mammoth all-inclusives, this eco lodge between Cabarete and Sosua on the D.R.’s north coast is the perfect retreat for penny-pinching yogis and back-to-nature types. Secreted within a lush tropical tangle that borders the sea, the hotel’s rustic-chic thatch-roofed casitas feature bamboo furniture, seashell shower curtains, and shower heads fashioned from conch shells. There’s also a small spa and yoga pavilion, as well as a pair of restaurants (try the Dominican breakfast at Karaya). Rates start at $130 per night.

Casablanca Hotel, Puerto Rico

There are so many reasons to love this 32-room boutique, smack in the center of Old San Juan. Compact digs designed in a style that recalls the setting of the classic film; a small-but-lavish lobby decorated with glittering chandeliers, canopied day beds and hanging lanterns and which doubles as an art gallery; plus a location that’s steps from the shops, restaurants and historic sites of the cobblestoned two-square-mile quarter and close to the cruise ship port. One thing to note: The Calle Fortaleza hotel is in an 85-year-old, four-story walk-up building, so pack light! Rates start at $139 per night.

Anacaona, Anguilla

You don’t have to be a big baller to vacay on the celeb-studded shores of Anguilla, where this intimate hotel is one of its best bargains. A two-minute walk from the sugary sweep of Meads Bay, where other suckers guests are paying rates upward of $600, the 27-room boutique has all the basics you need for a beach break (two pools, a restaurant, and a small spa) plus some of the warmest staff we’ve ever encountered. Rates start at $140 per night.

Saba Rock, British Virgin Islands

This tiny spit afloat in the North Sound is a magnet for yachties and guests of the plush resorts on nearby British Virgins. They come to sip mojitos at the oceanfront bar and restaurant and to witness the daily spectacle of tarpon feeding off the dock. But if you decide to linger past happy hour, there are eight stylish suites on the one-square-acre island, the smallest of which, Anguilla, opens onto a petite beach. Bonus: A complimentary water taxi makes getting to neighboring Virgin Gorda a cinch. Rates start at $150 per night.

Bonus: Sunshine Suites Resort, Cayman Islands

Got more wiggle room in your budget? This resort tops our $150 benchmark a bit, yet still offers excellent value relative to the destination. With a local currency that’s stronger than the U.S. dollar, the Cayman Islands are a pricey proposition, and staying on Grand Cayman’s marquee strand, Seven-Mile Beach, is guaranteed to be wallet-wrenching. But check in just across the street and you’ll snag a great deal at this all-suite hotel, where 130 spacious rooms have equipped kitchens so you can save on the island’s notoriously spendy restaurants as well. Light breakfast and Wi-Fi is included in the rate, as is free access to a nearby gym. Rates start at $222 a night.
