15 Scenes From Brazil's Gorgeous, Underrated North

Sometimes when you’re traveling, you stumble upon one of those places that are yet to be exposed to the masses. And north Brazil is one of them. This area stretching up the coast from Salvador to Jericoacaora has eluded mass tourism, and is a fresh, untouched piece of paradise just waiting to be discovered.

Unless you speak fairly comprehensive Brazilian Portuguese, it’s the kind of place you might find difficult to travel around independently, as most of the locals don’t speak fluent English. So I managed to find a trip with Intrepid Travel that took me exactly where I wanted to go: into the pulsating heart of Brazil’s northern states. In our small group of 10 other travelers, together we discovered the food, music, culture, and of course, beaches, that this off-the-beaten track destination had to offer.
