Neil Gaiman: ‘Is it right that people are punished for what they say? No, but it’s always been done’

  • Neil Gaiman is late. I’ve been waiting an hour when the author pops up on Zoom, a boyish 62, tousle-haired and apologetic. He says he was writing and lost track of time. But writing what? “I can’t tell you.” Go on, give us a hint. “I can’t. Everything is a bit mad right now.” He’s referring to the American screenwriters’ strike that “might be coming at the beginning of May. How do I put this? Hypothetically speaking, one might find oneself in a position where things that had not technically yet

Author scorns former wife through Goodreads

When you are a 59-year-old fantasy author going through a divorce, using Instagram or Twitter to get back at your soon-to-be-ex seems too immature. Neil Gaiman and Amanda Palmer had been married for 10 years until Palmer announced on her Patreon account on May 3 that the couple was divorcing. In a now-deleted tweet, Gaiman responded on May 4 with a note that seemed to suggest he was not aware Palmer was going to post on Patreon. “I see @amandapalmer has told people that we (like much of the world) are going through rocky times right now. It is true, we are. It’s really hard, and I’d like to request privacy (as I’m not going to be talking about it publicly) and kindness, for us and for Ash”. Ash is the couple’s 4-year-old son, who, for now, is staying in New Zealand with Palmer. A week later, a Twitter user discovered that Gaiman had made an update on his Goodreads account that seemed to be a passive-aggressive dig at his former spouse. The update said that Gaiman was reading a book about divorcing someone with a personality disorder. Gaiman, however, insists that it was not intentional and that someone else had hacked his Goodreads account. “Someone with a dark sense of humour just hacked this account … I suppose that’s what I get for leaving it here and not doing anything for a long time”. Since then, the book has been removed from Gaiman’s Goodreads profile. But people on the site seemed split in believing whether Gaiman had actually been hacked or not. “You get to choose whether to share, or not,” one poster responded to Gaiman’s excuse. “It always asks me when I read a kindle book”. “I love your work and your relationship is your business,” a fan commented. “Hackers are such jerks. I’d rather you spend time writing than debunking ridiculous rumors”. Gaiman has yet to comment further on the Goodreads post or his relationship with Palmer
