YouTube is testing a new layout. The internet hates it.

TAMPA, Fla. (WFLA) — YouTube, which is owned by Google, is currently testing a new layout, which is a big change from the old interface.

The new layout moves the comments section to the right side of the video player, where related videos used to be — and away from a spot they’ve been for nearly two decades. The related videos are now larger and show underneath the video. The video title and channel name are now much smaller and also off to the right side.

Florida social media bill signed into law, legal challenges lie ahead

Many users on social media have already started to complain about the layout, calling it a downgrade.

“Hey @YouTube idk whose job it is to change UI and layout for no reason but could you have them do literally anything else,” one user wrote on X, formerly known as Twitter.

“Complete disaster. Reading comments is a pain,” another wrote.

One user complained about the size of the comments, stating they were even difficult to read on a 27-inch monitor.

“The comment section always has been the real core of YouTube and it should stay front and center,” one user wrote.

Other users described the change with words we can’t publish.

But not everyone hates it. One user noted that they found it easier to read the comments without having to scroll away from the video.

“Before you’d have to scroll down a little to see any comments, but now you can see them immediately! I think it’ll be great for community and engagement,” the user wrote.

The YouTube support account on X replied to one of the users about the change.

“We’re currently testing a few different layouts to learn what people like / don’t like and what makes the viewing experience even better,” the company said, with a link pointing to a page describing how to give feedback.

In a statement to WFLA.com, a Google spokesperson said the new layout is “being tested with a small group of users” with the hopes of making it easier “for users to read comments and find related videos while watching YouTube on desktop.”
