Why is Reddit down? Social networking site suffers outage, displays 502 bad gateway error

The social media site Reddit was offline for about an hour Thursday afternoon but has since returned.

Downdetector, which tracks website outages based on user submissions, showed 66,732 Reddit outage reports during its peak at 1:03 p.m. ET. By 1:33 p.m., those reports had dropped to 15.

According to Redditstatus.com, an issue with a backend system impacted many users at 12:52 p.m. ET. The issue was identified at 1:14 p.m., and a fix deployed at 1:38. By 1:42 p.m., Reddit was "now confident all Reddit services are available and stable."

Earlier Thursday, at 12:02 p.m., Redditstatus reported that ads.reddit.com had degraded for some users. That issue was resolved by 12:38 p.m.
