What the Heck Is Samsung Unveiling on March 1?

Last night, Samsung sent out event invitations to members of the press that look like this:

The event will be held on March 1, in Barcelona, at the annual Mobile World Congress. MWC, as it is known, is a convention where tech companies show off their latest mobile goods –– smartphones, smartwatches, Bluetooth earbuds, training potties with iPad stands.

Now look at the photo above: What is Samsung about to unveil?

Based on the invitation alone, I would say: a recently discovered piece by turn-of-the-century minimalist sculptor Constantin Brancusi. Ladies and gentlemen, I present to you the Samsung Galaxy SBird in Space 2.

More realistically, Samsung is readying a new flagship smartphone to take on the iPhone 6. Last year at MWC, Samsung revealed its Galaxy S5, considered by many tech reviewers to be the finest smartphone running Android you can buy. (Our own Daniel Howley recommends the heftier Galaxy Note 4, though he is a man who likes his screens really big.)

Most tech blogs and phone dogs think that this dark outline reveals the contours of the Galaxy S6. That means: If you are in the market for an Android phone and you are even mildly curious about the Galaxy S5, you would be well-served to wait until March to check out what Samsung’s got up its sleeve. With HTC and Sony also reportedly preparing smartphone releases, February just become a very bad time to buy an Android phone.

Whatever Samsung unveils –– new smartphone, sculpture that is considered a hallmark of modernism –– Yahoo Tech will be on the scene in Barcelona covering the whole thing. Make sure you check back here on March 1 for the grand reveal. (Put it in your calendar right now so you don’t forget.) You are not going to want to miss what very well could be the moment that Android smartphones and minimalist sculpture finally collide.

Or, I don’t know, your first look at the Galaxy S6. Either way, should be educational.

POSTSCRIPT:

1. Many of you have pointed that it is possible that Samsung will unveil a fork of some kind. Looking at the image above more closely, I can now see the fork. I will add “fork” to my list of possible new Samsung gadgets.

2. It was also pointed out to me that just because many phones will be unveiled at MWC in Barcelona, that does not mean they will be available in the United States anytime soon –– or at all. The Galaxy S5 was unveiled at the beginning of March 2014; it didn’t go on sale until mid-April. We are also likely to see several smartphones unveiled that NEVER come to the United States: This convention is focused on Europe, after all. (Did you know there was a continent other than North America? Crazy!)

3. It’s also very possible that the image above shows the Galaxy S Edge, as Phone Arena points out. The Galaxy S Edge would be a smaller version of its Galaxy Note Edge, an experimental phone with a touchable display on the edge of the phone. (Daniel Howley reviewed it, and mostly hated it, here.) Here’s one graphic designer’s take on what the Galaxy S Edge might look like, based on the invitation above:

Looks neat! Not “Samsung Galaxy Fork” neat…but neat nonetheless!
