What’s The Stereotypical Old Person’s New Car?

When I was a kid, the stereotypical cars that old people drove included the exact pearlescent white 1998 Cadillac DeVille that my grandmother owned, any Buick sedan, Lincoln Town Cars, Ford Crown Victorias, and Toyota Avalons — mostly large, comfortable sedans. Now though, in a world where Cadillac sedans have gone all sporty and firm; Ford, Lincoln, and Buick have all stopped selling sedans; and the Toyota Avalon is no more, what modern vehicles are left to take the torch and ferry silver-haired AARP members to all of their doctor’s appointments? - Logan Carter Read More

Some cars age better than others. It’s just a fact of the industry. Because of that, some cars that may not have looked too hot when they first came out have really grown and matured as the years go by. It means we get a new appreciation for them, which is what led us to last week’s question. - Andy Kalmowitz Read More

Ditch all of your cars and settle on just one? Like it’s just that easy? Come on, it would be so hard to reduce a car enthusiast’s fleet to just a single car. That’s ludicrous. Unless, maybe, it’s one of the following fifteen suggestions made by Jalopnik readers. Earlier this week I asked you all to provide me with the one car you’d be happy to drive until you die. Here’s what you all came up with. - Bradley Brownell Read More

What’s cooler than a concept car? The sleek lines, the novel powertrains — few cars are as interesting or eye-catching on an auto show floor. But, while many concept cars eventually morph into nearly as-cool production variants, not all are so lucky. Last week, we asked you for your favorite failed concept cars — the vehicles that never made it to production — and today we’re taking a look at your answers. Let’s dive in. - Amber DaSilva Read More

You Can Have One Car For The Rest Of Your Life, What Is It?

In my dreams last night I was visited by the spirit of the future of automobiles. This spirit appeared to me as, like, the general feeling of whatever the opposite of Jay Leno is. It told me that if I were to sell all of my many cars immediately and without consideration for price, I would be gifted with a single automobile of my choosing. The catch was, I’d never be able to buy or build another car ever again. Could I ever be content with just one single car instead of the eight I have now? What could possibly exist that would keep me happy? - Bradley Brownell Read More

It seems like everyone and their mum is working on a restomod these days. You’ve got people working on old Volvos, engineers modernizing old Alfas and all kinds of clever people working out how to turn classic muscle cars into EVs. We’re truly living through the restomod golden age. - Owen Bellwood Read More

What's The Worst Thing About Owning A Car?

In my driveway, right now, I have four cars. If you combined them all together, I’d probably have the equivalent of one good, decently functioning vehicle — but even then, I doubt I’d have functional brakes. For me, that never-ending maintenance cycle is probably the worst thing about vehicle ownership; right when I think I’ve got one vehicle all sorted, the next one farts out. Today, I want us all to revel in the horrors of car ownership. Jalopnik readers, what do you find to be the worst part about owning a car? - Elizabeth Blackstock Read More

I was indirectly taught about the horrors of car ownership at a young age. My family had a small collection of classics, plus two daily drivers. The classics didn’t run, but they still cost a small fortune to keep them stored in our pole barn and protected from mice. As a result, the daily drivers were pretty gnarly, since we couldn’t afford anything new or nice — and as they aged, they also started to fall apart in ridiculous ways. I should have taken it as a warning; owning even one car can be tough, but trying to maintain a small fleet is draining. I did not listen. - Elizabeth Blackstock Read More

The automotive world is multifaceted, layered and complex. That complexity can be both a strength and a weakness, especially in regards to the things that people say or believe about cars or automotive related topics. When it comes to automotive opinions, sometimes it seems like there’s more bad ones than good ones. - Lawrence Hodge Read More
