WatchOS 2 Is Now Available For the Apple Watch
After a bug forced Apple to delay its release alongside iOS 9 last week, watchOS 2 is finally available for the Apple Watch. As the first major update for the Apple Watch, the OS now brings with it a number of new features, most important of all being native third-party app support.
Today’s update, originally unveiled at WWDC, paves the way for developers to provide a better experience for Apple Watch owners. Right now, third-party apps that run on the watch are beamed down from a paired iPhone, but apps that run directly on the Watch promise to be faster and much more capable. Users can also expect new Complications, custom watch faces, and improvements to Siri, Maps, and Digital Touch.
Given the significance of today’s update, it was a surprise to see it delayed. An Apple spokesperson told The Verge that the bug that caused the delay was minor and not something most users would have noticed. However, despite claims that 97 percent of users are satisfied with the Watch right now, the stakes are still high for the Watch’s success. It’s still not clear how well the it’s selling, and if Apple wants it to truly be its next great device, there isn’t much room for missteps.
