What you’re about to see is scan-tastic. You might even say it’s scan-dalously good. OK, we’ll stop. But seriously, this is cool.

Two years ago, Web video illusionist Brusspup created a series of animations using a technique called “Scanimation.” It’s a clever concept in which a single image contains within itself several different frames, which can be “unlocked” in sequence by passing over it a transparent overlay printed with fixed-width bars.

Not content with his first go-around, Brusspup has created a new series of animations, based on the same technique but more sophisticated than before. His new batch incorporates perspective tricks that create a powerful 3D illusion.

Keep in mind, there’s no CGI going on here. What the camera sees is what the naked eye would see as the overlay is passed over the image underneath. It’s a wonderfully low-tech effect. And if you’re feeling ambitious, you can try to make your own.

You’ll find more of Brusspup’s videos on his YouTube channel.
