  • Volkswagen plans to integrate ChatGPT—an artificial-intelligence-based system—on models with VW'S latest infotainment system, and we saw it work at the CES technology show today.

  • The chatbot feature expands on existing voice controls by recognizing more than explicit commands, and its capabilities will continuously evolve, VW said.

  • VW hasn't yet confirmed the AI system will appear in U.S. models such as the ID.4 SUV and the updated 2025 Golf GTI, but ChatGPT will debut in other markets later this year.

It was only a matter of time until artificial intelligence begins to make its way into our automobiles. Volkswagen has the distinction of being the first mass-market automaker to tip the scales: At CES today, VW introduced a ChatGPT-based system that responds to voice commands.

The company has dubbed the new virtual assistant "Ida." Simply say, "Hello Ida" or hit a button on the steering wheel to bring the feature to life; it's much like activating an Amazon Alexa device or Apple's Siri function. While BMW, Mercedes, and other automakers offer similar voice-activated systems, VW alone uses ChatGPT, which is facilitated through the company's partnership with Cerence Inc.

We Asked Ida a Few Questions...

We had the opportunity to participate in a live demonstration of the new cloud-based software, which was operated through a VW ID.7's large touchscreen infotainment system. Along with quick responses that were almost always clearly understood, what stood out was the type of questions that we could ask that the system would understand.

For instance, most voice-recognition software will respond to explicit requests such as asking for directions to the nearest grocery store or weather updates, but VW's chatbot was able to understand that we wanted directions to nearby Indian restaurants after we said we wanted chicken tikka masala for dinner. We also asked what there is to do in Las Vegas, which was followed by the AI assistant providing a list of popular attractions, such as visiting the Neon Museum. When we said, "Tell us about the Neon Museum," IDA provided a detailed overview, almost like a tour guide.

How Secure Is It?

Of course, Ida can also control simpler functions such as adjusting the climate settings and giving turn-by-turn directions. And for those worried about security, VW says the chatbot doesn't require users to create an account, it can't access vehicle data, and it also immediately deletes questions and answers.

VW says this is only the tip of the iceberg. As those paying attention to AI already know, the software is designed to constantly evolve and eventually become even more conversational, with the ability to build upon previous commands and inquiries. And since the Cerence Chat Pro software is cloud-based, current VW models with the company's latest operating system will be able to adopt the AI functionality via an over-the-air update.

When the chatbot feature becomes standard equipment sometime later this year, the list of compatible models will include the VW ID.3, ID.4, ID.5, and ID.7 as well as the new Passat, the new Tiguan, and the updated Golf. However, as it stands, Volkswagen is still deciding whether it will offer the ChatGPT feature on U.S. models. If the company decides to go that route, we don't expect availability until possibly early in 2025, which by that time would likely include models such as the ID.Buzz and the refreshed Golf GTI.
