The 2024 Kia Sportage and Nissan Rogue are not the best options in the compact SUV segment, but they are among the most comfortable ones. If highway cruising is what you’re after, then look no further. But if you want something with some competence driving about backroads, you may want to look elsewhere.

The 2024 Kia Sportage X-Pro Prestige is the model's flagship trim.

It combines the tough looks of the lower-end X-Pro with the feature content of the less aggro SX Prestige.

Though Kia offers both gas-electric and plug-in hybrid powertrain options, the X-Pro is exclusive to the entry-level gas-only setup.

Power comes courtesy of a 2.5-liter four-cylinder with 187 horses. All-wheel drive is standard on the X-Pro, as is an eight-speed automatic.

The chunky all-terrain tires made for a cushy ride, even if they limited the Sportage's grip to 0.81 g around the skidpad.

The 2024 Nissan Rogue is a gas-only affair, and comes exclusively with a 201-hp turbocharged 1.5-liter three-cylinder.

Front-drive comes standard, and all-wheel drive costs $1500 extra. A continuously variable automatic transmission is the only gearbox game in Rogue town.

The Rogue needed 8.0 seconds to hit 60 mph—1.1 seconds ahead of the Sportage.

Passing at speed was not the Rogue's forte, and it took 4.6 seconds to accelerate from 30 to 50 mph, a tick slower than the also-sluggish Sportage.

In general, the Rogue's mechanical controls—from its brake pedal to its accelerator pedal to its steering wheel—all felt poorly calibrated.
