VHS Camcorder App Makes iPhone Videos Look Like They’re from the '80s

Break out the New Coke and slide on your favorite pair of ankle warmers: The new VHS Camcorder app for iPhone is here to make the video you shoot with your handset look like you recorded it back in the ’80s with an old-school VHS camera.

Yes, this is a real app. No, it doesn’t serve any purpose beyond being silly. But who cares? It’s fun, it’s goofy, and every person I’ve shown it to loves the idea.

The app lets you shoot in different resolutions and frame rates, to make the video look clear or pixilated. You can also degrade the image quality by swiping across the screen.

Rarevision, the people behind the VHS Camcorder app, even went so far as to make your video’s audio quality sound like garbage — just like Dad’s old camcorder!

And if you want, you can spoof the time and date of the video, so you can make it look like you really did shoot it in 1989. You can even put the date directly on the screen to complete the disastrously cheesy package.

Nostalgia like this isn’t free: The app costs $4 in the iTunes App Store. Thirty years ago, that could have bought you dinner at Roy Roger’s or a six-pack of Schlitz beer.

But if you’ve got the cash and want to relive the totally tubular ’80s, the VHS Camcorder app should do the trick.
