Ukraine tests 5G technology amid ongoing war
Ukraine is making strides in digital communication by conducting its first 5G test calls, despite the ongoing war, Ukrainian Digital Transformation Minister Mykhailo Fedorov announced via Telegram on May 27.
As the European Union targets full 5G coverage for all cities and major roads by 2025, Ukraine has joined nearly 100 other countries in testing this advanced telecommunications standard. "5G was launched in Ukraine for the first time in test mode," Fedorov's message stated.
The test call was successfully made between the Promprylad Innovation Center in Ivano-Frankivsk, Vodafone's office in Kyiv, and Nokia's office in Helsinki, verifying the quality of communication over the 5G network. "Everything works," confirmed the minister.

Despite challenges posed by the war, which impacts the availability of necessary frequencies, Fedorov in February expressed hopes of launching a pilot 5G project by year's end. He mentioned that while nationwide 5G implementation faces delays, local deployments are feasible.
5G technology promises significantly faster speeds, supporting up to 10 Gbps, whereas the current 4G network in Ukraine offers download speeds up to 700 Mbps and upload speeds up to 90 Mbps. For comparison, the average 5G speed in the United States is approximately 186.3 Mbps.
