Turn Text into an Instant Video Mashup with the Help of Homer Simpson and the Guy from ‘300’

Sometimes it’s not what you say; it’s how you say it.

A site called Crumbles.co offers amusing proof of that old cliché, by converting typed words into an instant video montage — suddenly your keystrokes become passages spoken by figures from TV shows, movies, and even the occasional amateur YouTube video.

The site also generates a link or a tweet, so you can irritate your friends and colleagues and followers with whatever instant-mashup messages you devise.

As an example, click on this: “This is way more interesting than working.” (Caveat: I could get the site to function properly only in Chrome.)

You’re limited to 25 words, drawn from a decent-sized dictionary of terms, so familiar slogans may be the most satisfying use of the tool — “We have nothing to fear but fear itself,” that sort of thing.

But 25 words is also enough to handle the original (shorter) version of the Pledge of Allegiance. Enjoy that here. And here is a passage from Gertrude Stein’s poem, “Sacred Emily.”

(When there’s no word-matching clip, the site renders the term in red and seems to drop in a random snippet of video with some kind of text-to-voice audio. But the result is still pretty satisfying.)

The site also offers two slight-variations — one will give you a lot of clips from the animated show Bee and PuppyCat, and the other will weight things as much as it can toward Homer Simpson. So for instance, click here to enjoy Homer delivering some wisdom on success and failure … from Bill Gates. Somehow, hearing Homer say this makes it a little more convincing.
