GoPro, Xbox, and PlayStation Among Most Popular Gadgets in 2014

This year’s most searched-for gadget by Yahoo users was Apple’s iPhone 6. But that wasn’t the only thing you looked for in 2014. A whole lot of you were interested in things like video games, e-readers, and action cameras.

Yahoo readers were very interested in the GoPro action camera, which lets you capture photos and videos while mountain biking across the Rockies, surfing in Hawaii, or while just hanging out in the backyard. It was the first item on the most-searched list that wasn’t a smartphone. That’s good news for GoPro shareholders; the company’s stock is up more than 70 percent since its June IPO.

The GoPro brand is synonymous with the action camera category, but it’s not the only game in town anymore. A growing crop of inexpensive GoPro alternatives has begun to spring up from companies like smartphone maker HTC, which debuted its $199 Re Camera, and Polaroid, which released its $99 Polaroid Cube.

But if you’re more interested in gaming action than filming it, you’re not alone. Both Microsoft’s Xbox One and Sony’s PlayStation 4 cracked the top 10 list for most searched-for gadgets of the year, coming in at numbers 7 and 9, respectively. What’s odd is that, for the vast majority of the year, the PS4 led the Xbox One in terms of sales.

It wasn’t until Black Friday that the Xbox’s sales numbers started beating the PlayStation’s, thanks largely to some seriously impressive deals. But that doesn’t mean that the console wars are over. Developers are only just figuring out how to take advantage of the consoles’ capabilities, which means we haven’t even seen what they are truly capable of yet.

What’s more, these two systems are expected to last for quite some time. In fact, Sony has the PS4’s lifespan pegged at 10 years.

Beyond gaming, Yahoo readers also searched for Amazon’s Kindle e-reader. For 2014, the online retailer not only released an updated version of its base Kindle, but it also debuted the all-new Kindle Voyage, which features an improved display, adaptive backlight, and thinner body than its predecessor.
