This Site Lets You Listen to the 4 Million Spotify Songs That Have Never Been Played

Nearly every streaming service on the market brags about its 20 million-plus song catalog. But with excess comes neglect. And like a garage full of juiced-up Maybachs featured on “MTV Cribs,” this vast collection of songs is forgotten as soon as the spotlight stops shining.

Enter Forgotify. It aims to help expose listeners to the nearly 20 percent of Spotify songs that have never been played on the music-streaming service. Think of it as the equivalent of scrounging through a Tower Records (RIP) bargain bin: It’s a grab bag of weird, random stuff, but if you persevere, you might just find something you like.

Using Forgotify is incredibly easy. Just visit the website and press the Start Listening button.

A screen will pop up with a random track. So far, mine have been mostly international songs. You can listen to the track in your browser by pressing the Play button, if you are logged into Spotify. If you have your Spotify desktop app open, it will automatically play through that.

If you’re not feeling a particular jam, you can click Next. But if you’re proud of your discovery, you can click the Share button.

When you decide to share the song, a box displaying a preview to your Facebook post will pop up. You can add your own message, but Forgotify takes the liberty of including a pre-fabricated humblebrag that says you were the first person to listen to the song.

If you want to save the song to your library, you’ll have to jump to your desktop app andstar it manually.

At the moment I’m having some trouble using the Next button on the page. And several users are reporting temporary errors loading the site, due to an unexpected influx of traffic. If you’re getting error messages, just go back to the home page and start over.

Hey, it’s no Genius music service, but think of it as a good chance to blow the dust off some old Bollywood classics you never knew existed.
