When your smartphone and tablet are both part of the Apple ecosystem, it's very easy to transfer information from one device to the other automatically. Knowing how to sync your iPad and iPhone is a step you only have to do once, and from there, all your apps, photos, and text messages will be available on both devices.

You're not required to sync all your data, however! You can select which specific apps and features you'd like to carry over to both devices. If you'd like to maintain separation (for example, not syncing your iPhone's text messages to your iPad), you can deselect any of the apps at any time.

Here's what you need to know about how to sync your iPad and iPhone.

How to Sync Your iPad and iPhone

  1. First, make sure your iPad and iPhone are connected to the same Wi-Fi and logged in with the same Apple ID. You can check this by going to Settings on either device and checking the name and email at the top of the screen.

  2. To start the sync on your iPhone, go to Settings > Apple ID > iCloud > Show All. You'll see all your iPhone's apps on this screen. From here, you can toggle these apps on and off, depending on whether you'd like them to sync with your iPad. Your settings will automatically save, so you can exit out of your iPhone's Settings whenever you're done.

  3. On your iPad, repeat the process by going to Settings > Apple ID > iCloud > Show All. Your iPad's apps are all listed on this screen. Make sure the same apps you chose on your iPhone are toggled on or off.

  4. That's it! The next time you open a synced app on your iPhone, you'll see any updates transfer over to the same app on your iPad and vice versa.
