Sony’s full PlayStation VR bundle will actually cost you $500

Earlier this week, Sony unveiled the pricing and availability of its upcoming PlayStation VR (PSVR) headset. Unfortunately, when the company showed what you get with the $400 system, three key components were missing: The PlayStation Camera and two PlayStation Move motion controllers.

Now Sony says that it will offer the PSVR with those three missing components as part of its PlayStation VR Launch Bundle. The only problem is, instead of costing $400, you’ll have to shell out $500.

The PlayStation Camera is used to track your head movements during games, so you really can’t use the PSVR without it. The Move controllers, meanwhile, let you manipulate in-game content using your own hand movements, which is another big draw of virtual reality.

In addition to the Camera and Move controllers, the launch bundle will include Sony’s PlayStation VR Worlds game, which will give you your first real taste of what PSVR has to offer.

When Sony first announced the pricing for the PSVR, most people — including yours truly — were admittedly excited about its relatively low $400 price. After all, the Oculus Rift costs $600, while the HTC Vive costs $800.

But when Sony showed the world what came in the box, we had to scratch our heads, as there were no Camera or Move controllers. Sony seems to be of the mind that a lot of people bought the PlayStation Camera already, so why include it with the PSVR? But I’ve met a ton of PlayStation 4 owners, and none of them own the Camera.

Heck, it doesn’t even come with the PS4, which means you would have had to shell out more cash to get one in the first place. And, since the Camera doesn’t do much for most PS4 owners, there was never any real reason to do so.

If there’s one good thing to come out of Sony’s new announcement, it’s that the price of the bundle is still a bit less expensive than we’d originally anticipated. Best Buy currently sells the PlayStation Camera for $60 and two Move controllers cost $50 each on Amazon, so adding them together would bring the total cost of the PSVR to $560. Instead, Sony is pricing the bundle at $500.

Unfortunately, the PSVR Launch Bundle is only available via pre-order and in limited numbers. But if Sony is smart, it will make that bundle its normal offering. Here’s hoping.
