Next to Super Mario, Sonic the Hedgehog is one of gaming’s most recognizable mascots, and now he’s back in a new McDonald’s promotion. Over in the UK, the “blue blur” gets the Happy Meal treatment, featuring collectible figures from the long-running franchise.

Unsure if it’ll come to the US

The promotion is live now and runs until February 6. The McDonald’s website announces the return of Sonic the Hedgehog in Happy Meal form, with a TV ad campaign (embedded below) to sell the marrying of video game characters and fast food.

As for what the promotion contains, there’s the chance to collect 12 characters, including Tails, Amy, Knuckles, and, of course, Sonic. These “themed toys” also include “hoverboards, tower stackers, puzzles and mosaic posters.”

The meal itself has a QR code that, when scanned, can “unlock the Sonic Speed Stimulator” and allow you (or your kids, if you prefer) to “zoom into a digital adventure” with the Sonic cast.

At the moment, it seems the promotion is just limited to McDonald’s restaurants across the UK. As of this article going live, there’s no word on whether a similar Sonic-themed Happy Meal marketing campaign will occur in other nations.

While his stock has fallen over the years, Sonic the Hedgehog continues to show up in a slew of new adventures. Older fans may agree that his heydays are past him, but the likes of 2017’s Sonic Mania show there’s still life left in him.

In any case, whether his games are good or bad, the fact that he’s returned as a McDonald’s meal shows he’s not quite ready to be put out to pasture just yet.
