If your mattress is in any way uncomfortable, not even the greatest percale sheets, pillows for sitting up in bed, or upholstered bed frames will be enough. Trust me, I've tried it all. And then, I realized, why should I settle for a one-type-fits-most mattress when smart mattresses exist? Before you ask, no, a smart mattress won't be able to play your nighttime meditations or replace your sound machine, but it will be able to adjust to your body so that you can get the best sleep of your life. Sounds pretty good, right?

Smart mattresses connect wirelessly to apps or remotes and allow you to customize some aspect of the mattress—most commonly firmness and/or temperature, but some also offer sleep tracking and fancier bells and whistles. They are still a bit of a rare luxury, but after combing through the available options and reading tester reviews, I've narrowed down the top five best smart mattresses (plus a little something extra for those of you that stay to the end 😉).

So, if you're tired of always having to adjust your sleep style to your mattress, read on to find a mattress that'll adjust to you!

Solaire Mattress

The Saatva Solaire mattress has 50 different firmness levels—aka, way more than the three levels (soft, medium, hard) typically offered by most mattress brands. Each mattress has at least one air chamber (sizes Queen and larger have two, so you and a partner can customize your sides) that fills up or down, depending on your preferred setting.

On top of customizable firmness, this mattress ensures you'll get the support you need, thanks to its multi-layer construction. Above the air chamber, you get 2" of gel-infused memory foam for cooling support, 1" of latex for better lumbar support, and a 3" pillow top with an organic cotton cover.

Glowing Customer Review: "My husband and I have different sleeping preferences. We've been sleeping on a split king Solaire adjustable mattress for three years now. We're both very happy with this mattress. This is the best mattress we've ever owned, and we've owned several."

M7 Smart Bed

Unwilling to part with your memory foam mattress? You don't have to! The Sleep Number M7 pairs a layer of cooling memory foam and contouring memory foam with adjustable firmness settings, so you can have the best of both worlds.

Like all smart beds from Sleep Number, the M7 offers dual adjustability, allowing personalized sleep preferences for both sides of the bed, and can hook up to the Sleep IQ app, which tracks your sleep cycle and provides insights into your sleeping habits.

Glowing Customer Review: "We bought this bed, which was our first purchase from Sleep Number, almost 2 years ago. My husband has Parkinson's and hadn't been able to sleep in bed for months because it was too painful. When he was able to sleep a full night in bed, we knew it had been the right choice. So much flexibility with how you can adjust the bed—from firmness to raising the head and feet."

Hybrid Premier

Smart mattresses with adjustable firmness typically use air chambers, which, when done poorly, can leave people feeling like they're sleeping on a very fancy air mattress. The isense Hybrid Premier mattress aims to eliminate that feeling by adding pocket coils for extra support. The mattress still has dual adjustable firmness and 8" of memory foam for comfort, just with added coil support.

The isense Hybrid connects with the brand's sleep app, which can track your sleeping habits and help determine the best firmness level (out of 20 possible settings) for you depending on where you need extra support.

Glowing Customer Review: "I've waited a year before writing this review because I wanted to make sure we are just as happy now as we were when we bought the mattress. We are still very happy with the mattress! Very comfortable and doesn't feel like a cheap air mattress."

TEMPUR-ActiveBreeze® Smart Bed

As a hot sleeper, I know firsthand how hard it is to get a good night's sleep when you can't regulate your body temp. Laying in a pool of my night sweats is not exactly what I would call relaxing, and cooling mattresses can only go so far. If your body temp is keeping you up at night, the TEMPUR-Active Breeze mattress may be your best hope.

The medium-firm mattress features personalized climate controls—one for each side of the bed—with one 60-minute warming setting (for an hour of warmth to lull you to sleep or wake you up) and three cooling settings that can keep you fresh all night long. Unfortunately, you can't personalize the firmness on this one, but the mattress does come with the Tempur-Ergo ProSmart Air Base, which is adjustable and comes with automatic snore response (it lifts your head during sleep to clear your airway), a massage mode, and adjustable lumbar support.

Glowing Customer Review: "A truly great mattress that has eliminated morning stiffness and back and hip pain! I love this mattress! It's one of the best decisions I've made regarding my health."

Sleep Number C2 Smart Bed

The C2 mattress is probably the most low-tech of all the smart options on this list, but it's also the most affordable. If you're just looking to dip a toe into the smart mattress pool, but aren't down to spend $2,000+, this is the perfect place to start. Like all Sleep Number beds, the C2 mattress features two air chambers for customizable support and connects to the Sleep Number app to give you updated reports on your sleep cycle.

Glowing Customer Review: "I've had my bed for about two months and it's been the best experience. I'm actually excited to go to bed and have a good nights sleep. I've suffered from lower back pains all my life, so waking up was always a challenge, but not anymore!"

What does a smart mattress do?

Unlike smart phones or TVs, a smart mattress can't tell you the weather or stream your fave Netflix shows. Instead, a smart mattress uses technology to adapt to your sleep preferences. Smart mattresses have at least one adjustable feature, most commonly firmness and/or temperature, that can be personalized via app or remote control.

Two main types of smart mattresses:

There are two main kinds of smart mattresses, those with adjustable firmness and those with adjustable cooling technology. Smart mattresses with adjustable firmness have hidden inflatable air chambers that expand (more firm), or deflate (less firm) according to your preference and sleep position. While those with adjustable temperatures usually contain some kind of fan or cooling system and are made with cooling materials to keep you feeling just right all night long.

These smart mattresses can also be paired with smart bases (like those offered by Sleep Number and Tempur-PEDIC) that might have adjustable backs, under-the-bed lighting, heat or massage settings.

Is a smart mattress worth it?

Smart mattresses are definitely worth it if you have a specific health condition or sleep issue that would benefit from you having a bit more control over your mattress. Many smart mattress reviewers noted that adjustable firmness helped with chronic back pain, or that adjustable temperature controls ended night sweats. If you're struggling to get a good night's sleep and you can afford trying a smart mattress, then it's totally worth it.

Many reviewers recommend going to try the mattress in person, if possible, since it is a bit of an investment. If that's impossible, be sure to keep track of the warranties and trial periods in case you need to make a return.

What are the cons of a smart mattress?

Other than the expense, each smart mattress has its own cons, like any mattress. One consistent complaint from testers is that smart mattresses that offer separate adjustments for the left and right side (queens or larger) often have a strange spot in the middle of the mattress that might be an awkward middle temperature or not as firm as the sides. This can be an issue for solo sleepers who prefer to sleep in the middle.

How to choose the right smart mattress for you:

Choosing the right smart mattress for you starts with a very simple question: why are you getting a smart mattress? If you have back problems, you're going to want to look for a smart mattress with adjustable firmness. If you struggle with night sweats or regulating your temperature, then a smart mattress with adaptable temp controls is where you want to look.

Other things to take into consideration include your budget, your living space, and whether or not you want to splurge on accessories, as some smart mattresses require the purchase of specific bases and bed frames, while others can fit more seamlessly into your bedroom setup.
