Sci-fi master John Carpenter dives into virtual reality in new music video
John Carpenter is the one of the masters of cinematic science fiction and horror (The Thing, Escape From New York, Halloween), but he's also a long time electronic musician, and his latest album, Lost Themes II, is just as gripping as his films.
But what really stands out is the music video for one song from the album called "Night" (video above). The entire narrative is based on the director donning virtual reality goggles to remotely control an android. Sure, that kind of stuff is pretty common fare for music videos, but when one of the most famous film directors in Hollywood slaps on a VR headset, you have to wonder if there might be an epic VR sci-fi/horror film coming down the line from the iconic director. Hardcore Carpenter fans will also remember that he was one of the first directors to depict a version of augmented reality on the big screen in the film They Live.
Alas, the music video wasn't directed by Carpenter, so what's shown here isn't a hint at anything to come, but at least we know he's probably thinking about VR.
Halloween's Michael Myers chasing you through darkened streets in VR would be pretty amazing, now we just have to wait and hope that the director decides to take us there now that VR technology has gone mainstream.
His production company didn't immediately respond to a request for comment.
