Sci-Fi Korean Robot Is Actually Very Real
A South Korean robot is getting attention for both its form and function. The Method 2 robot bears a striking resemblance to robots from the silver screen, but could soon see action in the DMZ between South and North Korea.
The robot was partially designed by Vitaly Bulgarov, whose worked with Boston Dynamics' on bipedal robotos and ILM on Transformers films. The Method 2 has a cinematic quality to it, calling to mind the armored exoskeletons of films like James Cameron's Avatar, but is very much not CGI.
The Method 2's creators, at Hankook Mirae Technology, claim that the "robot is the world's first manned bipedal robot and is built to work in extreme hazardous areas where humans cannot go (unprotected)." That's according to Mirae company chairman Yang Jin-Ho, who also noted that the robot was in "baby steps" and needed a couple years before it would be allowed to "move freely."
Yang says that the robot, which could also be used for construction and manufacturing, should be available for commercial sales at the end of 2017, at which point all that will stand between you and the robot of your Hollywood dreams is $8.3 million.
