Samsung Galaxy Note 4 Poised to Battle iPhone 6 This September

September looks primed to be one of the biggest months for smartphone buyers in quite some time. Not only is Apple expected to debut a new, larger 4.7-inch iPhone 6, but now it appears that Samsung will launch its monstrous Galaxy Note 4 during the month as well.

According to The Korea Times, Samsung will unveil the Note 4 during a press event at the IFA technology conference in Berlin, Germany, on Sept. 3. Apple, meanwhile, is expected to take the wraps off its iPhone 6 sometime in September, though some reports point to an October debut.

The timing of Samsung’s launch isn’t an accident. According to The Korea Times, parts suppliers for the Note 4 say that Samsung is rushing the handset out the door ahead of Apple’s big event in an effort to steal some of the iPhone 6’s thunder.

Based on the latest rumblings, the Galaxy Note 4 looks like one of Samsung’s most impressive smartphones to date. The so-called “phablet” (a techie word combining “phone” and “tablet” given to smartphones with larger screens) is expected to sport a 5.7-inch display — the same size as the screen on the Galaxy Note 3, though crisper than its predecessor’s.

Inside, the Note 4 is expected to get a more powerful processor, as well as an improved camera. According to the folks at SamMobile, the Note 4 will even come with an ultraviolet light sensor that can tell you how strong the sun is during the day so you can better protect your skin.

There’s also talk of Samsung possibly launching a variant of the Note 4 with a curved display, though that will likely be more of a niche product than the standard Note 4.

Samsung recently launched the Galaxy S5, which is closer in size to the iPhone 5s and is Samsung’s best-selling phone. The Galaxy Note series is intended to appeal to those who want a much larger screen.
