T-Mobile CEO, John Legere, announced Tuesday their new data rollover plan called Data Stash that will let customer’s keep any unused monthly data.

This feature is among the mobile carrier’s new “Uncarrier” plan to mix things up in the wireless industry. The unused data will be thrown into a “Stash,” which will allow customers to break into once they go over their monthly limit.

Before, when a T-Mobile user went over the data limit, the carrier would automatically reduce the phone’s network to 3G rather than 4G.

Data Stash is only available to customers with a Simple Choice plan and has purchased at least 3GB of 4G LTE data and 1GB for tablets.

Legere explains how the new plan is to help consumers win without having to worry about penalties. “Americans have been gamed by the carriers into buying huge data plans – all to avoid getting screwed with overage penalties, only to find out they bought more than they need, which is then confiscated by the carrier.”

T-Mobile is currently the fourth largest mobile carrier in the nation. The company’s LTE network reaches 260 million people across the U.S., and by the time the New Year rolls in, they expect to reach 300.

The NPD Connected Intelligence says that the average U.S. smartphone owner uses 2.5 GB of date every month. That means with T-Mobile customers on the $60 3GB Simple Choice plan, the average user will carry over 500 MB of data per month.

T-Mobile has also introduced their Wideband LTE, which prevents data slowdown when a large number of people are on the network at the same time.

Verizon has a similar program called XLTE, which reaches twice as many people as Wideband. But Verizon doesn’t offer data rollover or an unlimited data package, which T-Mobile has for $80.

The company’s unused data can roll over for up to a year. And as a gift, the company is giving customers 10 GB of 4G LTE data.

T-Mobile continues to come up with innovative ideas that will keep them competing with larger mobile companies. The last time they shook up the mobile market was when they introduced a plan that allowed customers to upgrade to the latest phone each year rather than the standard two years. Since then, AT&T and Verizon have come up with similar plans.
