One sweeping infographic breaks down the entire 7-year history of Android
In November of 2007, Google established the Open Handset Alliance and revealed that Android would be its very first product. Seven years later, Google’s mobile operating system seems unstoppable, dominating nearly every major market in the world. By allowing its open OS to proliferate, Google has become an inseparable part of the smartphone scene.
In order to celebrate the achievements of Android over the past seven years, Mobile Madhouse has updated its “Sweet History of Android” infographic with the most recent watershed moments, including the launch of Android Wear, the flagship devices from Sony, HTC, LG and Samsung and the rollout of Android 5.0 Lollipop.
The infographic stretches back all the way to 2003, when Andy Rubin and his partners founded Android Inc. Less than two years later, Google came knocking and bought out the small startup.
In 2009, the company began naming its updates after sweets in alphabetical order; in 2010, Android reached 33% market share worldwide; by 2011, Android had captured more than half of the global market.
It’s been an impressive run for Android, but it’s not over yet. Every month, another impressive contender hits the market, whether its Google’s own Nexus 6 or Motorola’s surprising Droid Turbo. By this time next year, 90% of the mobile world could be running Android. If that’s not a happy birthday, I don’t know what is.
